The Department of Surgery has the significant achievement of having had three faculty members serving as elected leaders of their respective surgery boards simultaneously. Although their exact term dates were not the same, Bryan Meyers, MD, MPH, Mary Klingensmith, MD, and Keith Brandt, MD, all served in substantial leadership roles for their surgery specialty boards during a concurrent time period. The boards represent three of the 24 so-called “member boards” of the American Board of Medical Specialties, which aims to certify the knowledge and skill of physicians and support their professional development.
Bryan Meyers, MD, MPH, chief of the Section of Thoracic Surgery and the Patrick and Joy Williamson Professor of Surgery, became chair of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) in September 2017 and will serve through 2019. The ABTS oversees certification of thoracic surgery training program graduates and the ongoing maintenance certification for approximately 3,000 thoracic surgeons. Meyers has worked to make the certification exam less punitive and more of a learning process.
Mary Klingensmith, MD, the Mary Culver Distinguished Professor of Surgery and vice chair of education, served as the 2017-2018 chair of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). ABS is the national governing body for more than 30,000 general surgeons and related specialists and certifies surgeons meeting a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. Klingensmith is the third woman in the history of ABS to serve as chair. She led a revamp of the continuous certification process for ABS.
Keith Brandt, MD, the William G. Hamm Professor of Plastic Surgery, began serving as executive director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) in 2015, with a term set to expire in 2024. The ABPS is the certification organization of approximately 9,300 plastic surgeons. Brandt manages the written, oral and maintenance certification examinations for the ABPS and serves as liaison between the ABPS and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Steven Strasberg, MD, Pruett Professor of Surgery in the Section of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Surgery, was awarded the Medallion for the Advancement of Surgical Care from the American Surgical Association in April 2018. Strasberg, also the Carl Moyer Departmental Teaching Coordinator, was recognized for his national leadership status in the safety of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery with his “Critical View of Safety” approach. Strasberg’s procedure has helped reduce patient deaths and disabilities by working to lower bile duct injuries and surgical complications caused by misidentification of anatomic structures during operations. Taught in general surgery training programs worldwide, his method has become a standard of care.
Laurie Punch, MD, associate professor of surgery in the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery, was named a 2018-2020 Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Teaching Fellow. Established in 2004 with a gift from Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb, and supported by The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the two-year fellowship honors faculty committed to clinical education and excellence and provides its three annual recipients extra time and innovative learning resources to focus on implementing special project ideas to enhance medical student and resident education. Punch is developing a curriculum on “the anatomy of gun violence” as a disease and public health issue, including a “Stop the Bleed” initiative to teach bleeding control methods to communities at high risk for gun violence.
Gregorio Sicard, MD, emeritus professor of surgery and radiology, received the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Lifetime Achievement Award at the society’s annual meeting in June 2018. The highest honor that the SVS bestows on one of its members, the award recognizes Sicard’s outstanding and sustained contributions to vascular surgery and his exemplary professional practice and leadership. Past president of the SVS, Sicard was the Washington University School of Medicine vascular surgery chief from 1983 through 2011. He is known for his pioneering work with vascular laboratory techniques and his multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Sicard’s many contributions in the treatment of peripheral vascular problems and non-invasive diagnostics techniques include treatment of aortic aneurysms by minimally invasive and open surgical techniques.
