The division spans seven surgical specialties. Surgeon educators lead one of the top general surgery residency programs in the country, and each specialty offers a rigorous training program.

Robust basic science, translational and clinical research contribute to major advances.

Major initiatives are public health efforts to teach bleeding control, clinical trials of blood-clotting agents, surgical site infection protocols, expanding access for underserved urban and rural cancer patients, a nationally accepted safe surgical approach to gallbladder removal, rejuvenating marginal donor organs, and expanding endovascular treatment of aortic and vascular disease.
